Overview

We provide students with instructions when they begin a writing assignment, but there may be times when you want to add a unique twist to the assignment. This article will show you how to add your own instructions and provide some suggestions for doing so.

Adding Instructions

When creating an assignment, expand the Add Your Own Instructions section of the creation form.

 Here's an example:

Instructions from the Student Perspective

Students will see your instructions when they begin the assignment. They can also view them again while they're writing if needed.

Viewing Your Instructions

Once you've issued your writing assignment, you can revisit your instructions and other assignment details on the Assignment Summary page

Click Show more to see the instructions in their entirety.

Ideas for Adding Instructions

You can provide students with whatever instructions you want. Use this optional feature to clarify how you'll be grading the assignment, to provide additional expectations, or even to give words of encouragement. If you've been working on a particular grammatical or punctuation rule, have them incorporate it into their writing. If you've been reading a text as a class, have them relate their sentences to it or even write from their favorite character's point of view.
