Overview
If you are a parent who wants to use Membean with your children, you can choose between a homeschool plan, a middle school plan, and a personal plan. This article will help you determine which option best fits your needs.
Homeschool Plan or a Personal Plan?
Personal plans are for independent study, so they are not associated with a school account. As the parent, you will not have access to the accounts outside of your student's login or be able to issue assignments or assessments.
Middle school plans are also for independent study, just like our personal plans, but the word list is one that is appropriate for students in grades 5-8.
Homeschool plans are set up like schools with the help of our Support Team. As the parent, you will be able to set custom training expectations, monitor your student's training, and issue quizzes and assignments.

FAQs
Which grades is Membean appropriate for?
Membean is designed for students in 6th through 12th grade, but many 5th graders use it successfully. We do not recommend Membean for students younger than 5th grade, even if they are advanced readers.
I don't homeschool my students. Can I still set up a homeschool account?
Absolutely. If you are looking for an engaging, rigorous program to supplement your student's school work and you'd like access to the teacher tools, the homeschool account is the right choice.
However, if your students use Membean for school, do not set up an additional account. All of a student's training should be on a single account, and overtraining can actually be detrimental to learning.
Can I try Membean to see if it's a good fit for my students?
Yes! If you are interested in a personal plan, you can sign up for a 3-day trial. We do not offer a free trial of our homeschool accounts. Feel free to sign up for a free personal account trial to see things from the student's perspective.
I have two children. Can they train on one account?
Students should not train on the same account. Membean personalizes learning. Each student is placed on a word list in their Goldilocks Zone where words aren't too easy or too hard. The program then adapts to their training to meet their learning needs. Sharing an account disrupts this personalization and significantly decreases its effectiveness.
My student used Membean at their previous school. Should they create a new account?
If your student used Membean at their school within the last year, then we recommend they continue building on their progress. Let us know that they have an account during set up, so we can transfer their progress.
If it has been more than a year since your student trained on Membean, then we recommend that they create a new account.
Will Membean prepare my student for the ISEE/SSAT and the PSAT/SAT/ACT?
Admissions exams will test your student's vocabulary. These exams do not publish official word lists, so there is no way to guarantee which words students will encounter when taking them. However, Membean carefully curates our word lists and helps students develop word consciousness, which encourages vocabulary development outside the program. Additionally, training on Membean helps students develop a strong, stable understanding of their words, so they remember them on test day and beyond.
Students preparing for the SAT/ACT may want to consider a personal SAT test prep account. It is important to note that these test prep accounts are not offered in our homeschool format.
